Very interesting little book. Not a childrens book as the cover might suggest, but an interesting and informative essay on Russian life and society. I especially like that the author has lived and studied abroad and compares and contrasts his experiences in Europe with life in Russia. Fun read. I would give it a 4.5, but can't figure out how to do that on the star rating.Product details

How To Survive In Russia From The Bear Mouth edition by Mikhail Bezrukov Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews
In this 44 page book you're not going to find any information on politics. Instead you will read about what life is really like in Russia! What do I mean? Well, just like London is not a true representation of England, Washington DC not a true likeness of the USA, neither is Moscow a true representation of Russia. This book is written by someone born in Russia and living in Russia. To be more precise the author lives in Irkustsk which is the capital of East Siberia, 3100 miles from Moscow.
You probably already know that Russia is the largest country in the world but did you know that it covers more than one eighth of Earth's land area? With the Ural mountains dividing Russia in two (not equally) the eastern side is called Siberia which is actually 70% of the land but home to only 26 million people.
Any ideas what a 'marshrootka' is? How about a dacha? Have you ever enjoyed a banya? Which is more popular? Coffee or tea? How about Christmas? Where does the Russians procrastination stem from? You'll find the answer to these questions and more in this informative, mostly well-written, conversation style book.
The author describes the Russian people as "a very passive and lazy folk". Did you know it is not polite to smile at strangers in Russia? What are you known as if you put one of your parents in a nursing home or hire a nurse for them? Learn some interesting facts about Lake Baikal.
The version of this book seems to have not been formatted quite correctly as the fonts change periodically. This is not a big deal and should not detract you from wanting to read this. I found it extremely interesting. Book provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz
Russian author Mikhail Bezrukov has a gift for erasing negative misconceptions about his homeland (he actually is from a small town in Siberia), offering instead some fine humorous vantages of his native land. To allay fears that this is propaganda in a time when the world seems a bit nervous about Putin’s policies Mikhail opens with ‘First of all, I would like to say that this book has nothing at all to do with politics. That issue will be totally ignored here. By the way, you will find the word "politics" only twice in this book. And by my calculations, you have already done that. When people around the world hear the word, "Russia", they usually get three images in their minds snow– cold– vodka. Sometimes, this figure obtains two more dimensions— gloomy people and merry bears playing balalaika. So, what is true and what is false? In this book, I would like to share my impressions of life (sometimes survival) in Russia, describe the life of ordinary Russian people, reject or confirm existing stereotypes about the Russian people and Russia itself. And I'll try to give some tips about how to survive here if you suddenly decide to go traveling to this cold country. So, it's really first-hand truth, because I was born in Russia and I've been living here for about 98.1% of whole my life (the remaining 1.9% I lived in Spain, being there on an internship from my university— kind of like a student exchange). My native city is very far from being Moscow. Far, according to all the indications, including a huge distance at more than 5000 km (3100 miles) between Moscow and my town— Irkutsk. Indeed, I don't know what to call it a city or a town. Irkutsk is considered to be the capital of East Siberia.I've read a lot of articles by foreigners, especially the inhabitants of the United States and Western Europe, in which they share their impressions about travelling to Russia. But the fact is that in the vast majority of these articles, foreigners describe the impressions they had received in Moscow. On the one hand, Moscow is the capital and the heart of Russia, the center of its culture. But in reality it differs so much from other cities in Russia.’
After that solid introduction Mikhail shares A tiny bit about the geography of Russia, A bit about the Russian winter, A bit about the Russians themselves, A bit about the Russian cuisine, A bit about the habits of the Russians and their way of life, and A bit about the Russian natural world.
Mikhail’s delightfully hilarious book makes us want to visit the Russia he describes. Take a look at the other side of dark and see if it doesn’t change your vision. This is one very funny and entertaining book! Grady Harp, January 16
Not particularly well written, or particularly thorough or in-depth. A voice an American (cold war veteran) was non the less interesting
Not great literature, but an interesting, entertaining, and accurate peek into Russian life. The author's humor makes it a quick and enjoyable read.
wonderful to understand a little more about russia and its people
I found it very informative and very easy to read and understand. I like the personal touch of description of how cold it gets and what they plant to eat. It was a very visual description.
This book is a gas. Comrade Bezrukov must be the life of whatever party he visits. So much fun to read!
