Being Light Adventures of a London Detective Agency edition by Helen Smith Literature Fiction eBooks

Having recently read and LOVED Alison Wonderland, I opened this novel and expected more of the same fast paced insanity that I so enjoyed. Albeit the brilliant cover hints at the hilarity within this story, to me BL seems a different type of humor than AW. Deeper, if you will.
I read AW and never wanted to put it down, however with Being Light, it was almost as though this was an unusual treat like none I had ever feasted upon, so I savored lines, and went back to reread lines. In other words, I did not gulp it down like I did with my first read by Helen Smith. Maybe I'm a little slow on the uptake, but the metaphors did not slap me in the face here, however when they did hit, it felt like genius.
I wanted to be a part of this Cuckoos Nest and forever live among this delightful cast of characters.

Many reviews here depict the story of what seems a mystery about the husband who disappears into air, so I will simply add Helen Smith did a brilliant job of turning this into a novel of self-examination. Being Light is only my 2nd read by Smith, but I want to bow down to her. Seriously! Her writing is my kind of crazy and I cannot get enough of her fabulous way of looking into lives, her creative storylines, atypical characters we come to love, her distinctive turn of phrase, her obvious intellect, and most importantly her expertise at engaging sophisticated readers. It is much more fun to puzzle out meanings within a work of art, than to have them spoon fed to you..

Being Light Adventures of a London Detective Agency edition by Helen Smith Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Being Light is the second book by Helen Smith that I have read and I enjoyed it just as much as the first one (Alison in Wonderland - one of my favorite books of the past five years!). It definitely has a different feel but it is a very clever and quirky book. I think that Smith writes very beautifully; I love her style and the way she really fleshes out her characters. Alison Wonderland is such a strong, smart and confident female lead; I lent this book to my daughter when I finished it because I like for her to read books with strong female main characters. Smith's style is most reminiscent of most the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency (one of my favorite series). If you like quirky detectives stories, you will love Being Light!
Helen Smith has such a quirky way of looking at the world, and I'm pretty sure this is why I love what I've read of her work. She takes the most innocent of situations and morphs them into something that opens up a whole new way of looking at things.

Being Light begins with a rather shoddy attempt at setting up a kid's bouncy castle which is subsequently lifted into the air by the wind... with Roy Travers aboard. As the castle makes its ascent, Roy realizes he's about to die. What follows are the journeys of an ensemble cast of characters whose lives and stories are seamlessly interwoven, made all the more compelling by Smith's inventive storylines and distinctive writing style. In short, Being Light is a poignant look at the decision to either hold on to things or simply let them go, and how whichever is chosen will impact the characters' lives - a subject that certainly the vast majority of readers will relate to, even with the wonderful absurdity Smith uses.

As other reviewers have noted, Being Light is not going to be for everyone. If you prefer a straightforward narrative that spells everything out, you should probably move on. But if you love being challenged and having to think about what you're reading, Helen Smith is one to put on your to-read list. She's a master at creating characters who, despite their eccentricities, are easy to relate to and the situations she puts them in, while not typical, are wholly plausible. And - this is a big one for me because I generally don't enjoy it - her present tense narrative doesn't come across as forced. Very few authors can write in present tense and do it well.
Roy Travers is helping his friend put up a bouncy castle for a fun day when he gets blown away aboard it and disappears. He finds himself in Paradise with an angel named Sylvia. Meanwhile his wife Sheila, unswayed by friends suggesting he might have run off with another woman or simply that he died in the freak accident, becomes convinced he has been abducted by aliens.

The book follows a cast of distinctive characters, whose lives are seemingly unconnected, but as the story develops the reader starts to see how they overlap. Some of the characters are larger than life and a good deal of humour derives from their views and actions in trying to achieve their aims, but there is also a sense of sadness that many are missing something from their lives, be it a person or a sense of direction. There are a lot of characters to keep track of but as the book progresses and their interactions become clearer it becomes easier to follow.

I enjoyed the satire and the wry observations about life the author makes, and I wanted to keep reading to find out what had happened to Roy but also to see who would finally connect with whom and how. I did find that because of the formatting on the kindle paragraphs ran together that probably shouldn't have, and it wasn't instantly clear that the action had moved, but careful reading and being engrossed in the story meant this was not a major issue.

I hadn't appreciated that this book features Alison of Alison Wonderland, had I done so I would probably have read that first to have had a greater background on her character but I think Being Light is perfectly capable of standing on it's own. It's a good, character driven story that I was desperate to finish to find out how things would turn out.
